Fermats' puzzle
Great story! One man, more than 300 years ago, stated a conjecture and for decades others tried to prove it! Why? Because of one note written by Fermat when he commented on Pythagorean triplets, stating it would only work for squares and never for exponents above 2:
I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this, which this margin is too narrow to contain. You should see this documentary or read the book on the subject! A constant changing of conjectures and refutations between mathematicians, sometimes a refutation of one theory means in the end a confirmation of another conjecture. Take a look inside the weird world of mathematics, its nerds and how they live trough these events like normal people experience for example the world championship soccer :-)
